The Other Side Of Truth free essay sample
The Other Side of Truth Beverly Naidooââ¬â¢s interesting novel ââ¬ËThe Other Side of Truthââ¬â¢ shows how telling the truth at all times may become an issue in certain scenarios. In this novel two Nigerian children, Sade and Femi, have to flee to England without anyone else they know, after their mother is shot by the Nigerian government, in order to be safe. Naidoo emphasises the difficulties that always telling the truth can cause, through the theme of problems with the truth. I will explain how Naidoo conveys this message in this essay. Throughout the novel, the characters experience a lot of drastic changes which alter their attitudes towards the truth. Sade, a Nigerian school girl, is the main character. Her and her younger brother Femi have been brought up with their father Folarinââ¬â¢s a strong belief that lying is unacceptable and that the truth must always be told no matter what the circumstances are. We will write a custom essay sample on The Other Side Of Truth or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page However Sadeââ¬â¢s opinions towards the truth change when she flees to England without her parents. Sade is upset by having to lie but she understands what the consequences may be if she tells the truth. Therefore Sade is left confused whether she is doing the right or wrong thing. ââ¬Å"Sadeââ¬â¢s mind crashed againâ⬠, shows how overwhelmed Sade feels. Meanwhile Femi feels entirely different. He blocks himself out of the situation and refuses to talk to anyone. However this just makes the situation worse as it creates a tense atmosphere between Sade and Femi and makes Sade feel as if she is alone. Femi didnââ¬â¢t want to be part of all the new changes that were taking place in his life. ââ¬Å"Femi wasnââ¬â¢t trying to make sense of thingsâ⬠shows how setback he was from everyone else and how unwilling he was to change. Although telling the truth in Nigeria could be fatal, Sade and Femi were brought up to never lie. Folarin, their father, was a journalist for a newspaper that published antigovernment articles. Even though the articles were truthful the journalists frequently found themselves in serious trouble with the government. Folarin believed that you should always tell the truth no matter what the situation. Because of this the Nigerian government shot Sade and Femiââ¬â¢s mother. ââ¬Å"Even the family house won ââ¬â¢t be safe. These people mean business. They know our village.â⬠This quote shows how unsafe Nigeria was to them. The novel also explains how the neighbourhoods are enclosed within gates with people guarding the entrance and exit. Once they had left Nigeria, Sade and Femi had hoped to be welcomed into a safe environment.à However the children didnââ¬â¢t experience a very safe start to their new life in London. Soon after arriving in England, Sade and Femi were abandoned by the stranger that had helped to smuggle them overseas. Whilst freezing in the winter wind, all of the childrenââ¬â¢s belongings were stolen by a homeless man. ââ¬Å"She broke off in horror as a shape rose up from the deeper shadows of the alley. This shows how terrifying the situation was to Sade and Femi. When Sade and Femi were given a foster family and start a new school, they are bullied but they are able to find help to try and reunite them with their father. ââ¬ËThe Other Side of Truthââ¬â¢ is told in third person limited which allows us to read the story from Sadeââ¬â¢s perspective. This enables us, as readers, to get to know all of the characters, especially Sade, more personally and realistically. By seeing things mainly from Sadeââ¬â¢s point of view you learn exactly how Sade and Femi feel about the truth and how strong their parentââ¬â¢s influences have been. There are several flashbacks though out the novel which gives you an insight into Sade and Femiââ¬â¢s life in Nigeria. They are helpful as they let you know why Sade and Femi may handle different scenarios the way that they do. In conclusion, Beverly Naidooââ¬â¢s novel ââ¬ËThe Other Side of Truthââ¬â¢ conveys how truth telling can make a huge impact within different situations. As readers, we are also able to see the different coping strategies that each of the characters use when they are put in a situation where they feel unable to tell the truth. This novel makes you think about how dangerous some of the countries in the world are and how badly other people are treated. Jenny Foster 2.6

huckleberry finn and pleasentville essays
huckleberry finn and pleasentville essays Have you ever heard of the great Mark Twain? Many people have and recognize his novels by name; especially his most famous book called Huckleberry Finn. The great thing about Huck is that it was meant to be a simple book, but ended up deemed a classic. The reason for this is that it contains many great american themes and motifs. Many American novels, books and movies also contain these themes and motifs, making it very easy to compare Huckleberry Finn to Pleasantville. Although very different stories, in comparison Huck and Pleasantville have the same motifs. Both the movie and the book have the motifs of going west, rebel vs. the establishment and Jim Crow/Shaman. This essay will compare these common American motifs. The go west motif is about the characters running away or escaping from where they previously were (this doesnt necessarily have to include a trip west). In Huck Finn the river is the tool used to help Huck and Jim escape from their life. The river helps to take Huck and Jim away from civilization and reunite them with nature. The river also helps to free them from slavery, Huck being a slave to the Widow Douglas and Jim actually being Miss Watsons slave. In Pleasantville a life in colour is how the townspeople are allowed to go west. When they are in black and white they have the perfect life, meaning that nothing can ever go wrong, therefore they can never learn from their mistakes. When David introduces the thought of thinking for themselves to the teenagers of Pleasantville they begin to notice that there are other places in the world, this begins to change things from black and white to colour. Both stories contain the motif of going west. Another motif in these two works is the Rebel vs. the Establishment motif. In Huck the rebel would be Huck and one of the establishments would be the civil ...

The statement that motivates me, my writing team, and our clients. Iââ¬â¢ve put my WHY statement on my new homepage, www.theessayexpert.com, on our new Why The Essay Expert page, and on my company Facebook page.à It reads: At The Essay Expert, we donââ¬â¢t go to bed until we know weââ¬â¢ve captured your essence on paper. Thatââ¬â¢s what gets each one of us up in the morning, because thatââ¬â¢s what will excite the right company or school about you. Not the person next to you. Not a list of bullet points. You. I added more ââ¬Å"whyâ⬠focused descriptions to my Executive Resume LinkedIn Success Package, Mid-Level Resume LinkedIn Success Package, and Entry-Level Resume LinkedIn Success Package pages too. Hereââ¬â¢s an example: Our professional resume and LinkedIn profile writers will make sure you stand out from the competition, highlighting your strengths and accomplishments so you donââ¬â¢t sound like everyone else. Iââ¬â¢ll continue to look for ways to infuse every communication with my WHY. Go team! 2. Provide better information on services on my site.â⬠¨ Iââ¬â¢ve made a lot of progress here and took the opportunity of a new website to put better descriptions of my services on the pages. I just added this information to my new ââ¬Å"a la carteâ⬠pages. Iââ¬â¢d say I got my first down on this one! 3. Serve 250 clients. Alternate play! The Essay Expert has been catering to more of an executive audience, including those seeking Board positions. To serve this market, weââ¬â¢ve on-boarded a few amazing new writers with great talent in executive resume writing. Weââ¬â¢ve refocused instead of expanded. 4. Publish 2 new editions of How to Write a KILLER LinkedIn Profile.â⬠¨ Touchdown! I released the 13th edition and am almost ready with the 14th. Right on schedule. 5. Get How to Write a KILLER LinkedIn Profile in front of colleges and universities. This one might be in the realm of managing the hot dog vendors ;-). To increase book distribution, I made a lot of cold calls to college bookstores, many of whom agreed to carry my book. I also submitted How to Write a KILLER LinkedIn Profile for consideration by Barnes Noble. And I received an inquiry from Skyhorse Publishing, who may be interested in publishing a trade version of my book if itââ¬â¢s not accepted by Barnes Noble. So Iââ¬â¢ve made a bit of progress! Is there a library, college bookstore, or career center in your area that you would like to carry my book? Please go into your local establishment and request the book if you want it! 6. Increase college essay / personal statement portion of my business to 25% of business.â⬠¨ Time out. Instead of focusing here, Iââ¬â¢ve put efforts into building my executive resume writing business. For now this one is on hold. 7. Find an editor to do some of the editing of resumes and LinkedIn profiles that Iââ¬â¢m currently doing. Seeking an assistant coach! I interviewed some potential editors and so far havenââ¬â¢t found the right match. I am also seeking someone to help with sales calls and client inquiries. If you know someone you think would be a great resume editor or sales person, please send them my way! EXTRA POINTS: One big project I undertook was redesigning my website ââ¬â again. This was not on my list, but it was a huge accomplishment which is still underway. The site was launched and weââ¬â¢re working out the kinks. Iââ¬â¢m calling this my ââ¬Å"extra pointsâ⬠ââ¬â although it has come with some unexpected new challenges and items which will likely show up on my goals for next year. It looks like I have my work cut out for me for the fall in order to win in this 4th quarter. How about you? I encourage you to look at your 2016 resolutions to see where you might want to recommit. Please share ââ¬â putting your promise and progress out to someone else creates accountability and makes it more likely that you will win your game!

Marriege & Family Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words
Marriege & Family - Assignment Example Young girls and boys are taught how to view marriage as a lifetime commitment and prepare adequately for it. I was fortunate enough to learn the values that should govern the marriage institution from a tender age. When I became of age and was ready to get married, I knew that I needed to find someone who could complete my life. I was well aware that I needed to have good qualities so that I could have something to contribute to my marriage. Therefore, I began to cultivate good qualities that define a noble wife before I got married. When I met my husband, I did not rush into a relationship. I ensured that I got to know him well enough and understood his strengths and weaknesses. Before we got married, we prepared adequately for our union. The most critical preparation was making decisions that could define our lives in marriage (Rubio 44). For example, were clear about the number of children we wanted to have, as well as how we would share responsibilities within our family. I ensured that we had similar perspectives regarding the most important aspects of life. Notably, two people cannot have exactly the same perspectives. However, some fundamental issues in marriage cannot work out if people have different perspectives. When I was sure that I could spend my life with him, we began to formalize our relationship. Finally, we held a beautiful wedding that marked the beginning of our marriage. We held a church wedding that symbolized our commitment before God and people. Therefore, it was obvious that separation or divorce was not an option from the start. My culture has strong values attached to marriage and does not condone divorce. The men in our society have learned to appreciate the social views concerning marriage. In addition, our men are willing to make marriages possible. In addition, the cost of marrying a woman is too high to consider divorce. Although many people may consider our society highly

Teenage Drinking Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words
Teenage Drinking - Essay Example One argument for teenage drinking is based on the fact that at the age of 18 individuals are already legal adults and can marry or get married, have a say in elections through voting, adopt children, drive vehicles, procure abortions, serve on juries, fly airplanes, hold important public offices, serve imprisonment and even capital punishment and sue or be sued in court, yet they cannot drink until they are 21 years old. This can only be termed as hypocrisy especially considering that one acquires a driving license at 16 years and can be entrusted with a gun for hunting at the tender age of 12 years while they cannot be entrusted with drinking (Hanson). There is also the view that prohibition of teenage drinking in public places has resulted in teenagers hiding and drinking in unsupervised places and maximizing such opportunities through binge drinking which has far serious health effects. Lowering the drinking age may have the effect of removing the taboo tag on alcohol and thus rem ove the thrill that drives teenagers towards alcohol and breaking the law. This will result in reduced binge drinking and moderate teenage alcohol consumption (ProCon). Bryson weighs in on the debate with the view that at the age of 18 one can not only represent the country in war but also work at a beer/wine/liquor distillery besides owning a bar among numerous other adult rights and freedoms such as paying taxes, act and access pornography, engage in commercial sex activities in some states, sign legal contracts and run for most political offices while being forbidden to drink. This is tantamount to treating the adults of 18-20 years as second class citizens. Besides all these, the drinking restriction has not served its purpose as evidenced by the amount of unstoppable drinking occurring at college level. Studies also indicate that there are no significant differences in harm caused by alcohol between an 18 year old and a 21 year old. Arguments against Teenage Drinking: Alcohol d rinking has been shown to have serious medical complications in teenagers especially when they engage in binge drinking. These include brain damage which is a consequence of the neurotoxicity of consumption of large amounts of alcohol and fears are that such brain damage may be irreversible. Comparative studies indicate that drinking teenagers have impaired memory and limited cognitive skills as compared to non-drinking ones. Teenagerââ¬â¢s brain is not structurally fully developed hence teenagers are at higher risks of damage in comparison to adult brains (IAS 3; CADCA 1; Trudeau). Johnson (2) identifies alcohol as a major contributor to juvenile delinquency stating that such teenagers are more likely to bear guns and other weaponry, damage property, commit rape and assault among other violent conduct and illegal acts. A closely related consequence of teenage drinking is engaging in abuse of other drugs including drugs such as marijuana, inhalants, cocaine and smoking (CDC Facts heet; Hitti). Such drugs not only create problems with the law but also health and mental problems alongside drop in performance in schools. This is a scenario which results in cross-over youths which referring to youths causing concerns across multiple systems such as counseling, juvenile criminal justice, education and health.

Cheating and Plagiarism - The Plague of Plagiarism Essay -- Argumenta
The Plague of Plagiarism à à à à Simply defined, the word plagiarism means "the unauthorized use of the language and thoughts of another author and the representation of them as one's own" ("Plagiarism").à While many students understand and comprehend the first clause of this definition, many encounter problems with the second part - the thoughts part.à Many students in today's educational system are frequently unable to develop their own thoughts, opinions, and ideas relating to the subject matter that they are studying.à However, when people at a university are educated according to the ways set forth by John Henry Newman in "The Idea of a University," their ability to create original concepts would be cultivated to the point, where they do not feel the need to plagiarize and cheat.à Newman also states that in the end, the university will produce citizens that can give back to society (48).à Jeffrey Hart makes a similar point in "How to Get a College Education."à Therefo re, according to both Newman and Hart, an honest person will be fashioned by the university.à Since honesty does not breed cheating, should not cheating then be minimized?à Plagiarism and its sister cheating are plagues on society that only serve to corrupt it.à Nevertheless, the education given by a university can diminish and, perhaps, even eradicate the disease by instilling in students,à a sense of honor, and implementing harsh penalties on those caught cheating or plagiarizing. à à à à à à The fostering of independent thought is sometimes forgone in today's educational system. At times, students are encouraged to just complete their assignment instead of thinking about what they are doing so that they may fully understand their... ... single disease.à So, if universities devote even part of their programs seriously to curing society of this plague, it is quite possible that cheating and plagiarism can be eradicated once and for all. à Works Cited à Clayton, Mark. Be able to prepare to provide support for eating and drinking Essay
Identify the level and type of support an individual requires when eating and drinking I should always check the individuals care plan to establish the level of support required by the individual when eating and drinking. I should also ask colleagues, the individualââ¬â¢s family, friends and the individual if they would like help and how they would like me to help. I must ensure Iââ¬â¢m not imposing a level of support which suits me or my organisation rather than the individual. I should provide the minimum of support possible in order for the task to be accomplished regardless of how long this will take or the mess the individual may make. I may need to support individuals to prepare for meal time with things such as protective clothing. I should check if they need support with positioning to ensure they are comfortable whilst eating and drinking. It may be that the individual is able to feed themselves, if provided with the correct equipment to do so. By providing the individual with the correct equipment Iââ¬â¢m providing active support and ensuring that Iââ¬â¢m supporting them in a way that helps the individual maintain their independence There is specially adapted cutlery available for individuals who may have arthritic fingers, where they are not able to grip conventional cutlery. An individual suffering with dementia may need to be prompted to eat at regular intervals. The individual may be sight impaired making it difficult to eat independently. An individual suffering with dysphagia and have difficulty swallowing. They would require their food to be pureed or may need to be fed via P.E.G. tube. Some indiv iduals may need to be fed if they do not have the use of their hands. There are many different levels and types of support depending on the individuals circumstances. Demonstrate effective hand-washing and use of protective clothing when handling food and drink Support the individual to prepare to eat and drink, in a way that meetsà their personal needs and preferences The individual may require protective coverings such as an apron to protect their clothing from stains from dropped food or drink and napkins to wipe themselves if necessary.I should provide individuals with the opportunity to use the toilet and wash their hands prior to their meal. An important aid to eating is an individualââ¬â¢s dentures. They should be available and also well fitting. They may have religious activities they wish to carry out prior to their meal such as praying, washing themselves or giving thanks. Provide suitable utensils to assist the individual to eat and drink. Ordinary cutlery can be too heavy to hold or too difficult to grip for some individuals and particularly those with arthritic hands. There is a wide range of specialist cutlery available to allow individuals to remain as independent as possible and manage eating and drinking with minimal assistance. Some of which is listed below: Types of utensil Purpose Angled cutlery For some people who finds it difficult to bring a fork or spoon at right angles to the mouth Easy grip handled spoon and fork For an individual who finds it difficult to grip cutlery. Plate guard If an individual is likely to shuffle food off the plate, the plate guard would stop food from escaping Melamine cups, plates and bowls, two handled drinking cups with a flexible plastic straw To avoid breakages if an individual is prone to dropping things For people with hand tremors Cups with a spout Very efficient if I need to avoid spillages Special plates with hot water compartment at the base Feeding cup Non slip tray with handle Gadget to remove lids from jars/bottles To keep food warm while individuals eat their food, useful if they normally take long to eat.
